The Boulder Philharmonic's Discovery Concert Program is a year-long collaboration with participating elementary schools to bring the excitement of live orchestral music to 4th and 5th graders, just as they are about to begin their own instrumental study at school. The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra provides a curriculum guide that is keyed to Boulder Valley School District standards by local teachers, and provides music samples so that teachers can easily incorporate preparation for attending this concert into their lesson plans for the year.
During the year, Music Director Michael Butterman or a Boulder Philharmonic chamber ensemble visits each participating school, giving students a chance to meet him, and learn more about what they will see and hear at the concert. In April, all the students come together to hear the full orchestra, and on returning to their schools are asked to do a followup writing assignment.
This will be our third year bringing our Discovery Concert program to the grand space of Macky Auditorium on the CU campus, creating a wonderful field trip experience for students from local schools in Boulder, Superior, Lafayette, and Jamestown. With support from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, it has also been our pleasure to take this program "on the road" with performances at Denver metro schools in Federal Heights, Strasburg, Brighton, and Englewood!
THANK YOU for another fun and inspiring Discovery Concert on April 24, 2014 at Macky Auditorium. Please stay tuned for an announcement of our 2015 concert date!
