The Boulder Philharmonic's Discovery Concert Program is a year-long collaboration with participating elementary schools to bring the excitement of live orchestral music to 4th and 5th graders, just as they are about to begin their own instrumental study at school. The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra provides a curriculum guide that is keyed to Boulder Valley School District standards by local teachers, and provides music samples so that teachers can easily incorporate preparation for attending this concert into their lesson plans for the year.
During the year, Music Director Michael Butterman or a Boulder Philharmonic chamber ensemble visits each participating school, giving students a chance to meet him, and learn more about what they will see and hear at the concert. In April, all the students come together to hear the full orchestra, and on returning to their schools are asked to do a followup writing assignment.
This school year, the Discovery Concert for Boulder Valley School District and local private schools will take place on Thursday morning, April 19, 2012. It was also our pleasure this year to perform at Pinnacle Charter School and Strasburg High School in Adams County!
